The hypothalamus is a basal part of the diencephalon that lies beneath the thalamus on each side, forms the floor of the third ventricle, and includes vital autonomic regulatory centers. It is responsible for certain metabolic processes and other activities of the autonomic nervous system. The embryonic hypothalamic region gives rise to the caudal pituitary gland as well as a number of brain nuclei.
