The habenula is either of two nuclei, of which one lies on each side of the pineal gland under the corresponding trigonum habenulae. It is composed of two groups of nerve cells, is connected to its contralateral counterpart by the habenular commissure, and forms a correlation center for olfactory stimuli. The habenula relays impulses from limbic areas of the telencephalon to an unpaired midbrain nucleus, the interpeduncular nucleus.
